Electric vehicles, or EVs, are on the Canton roads now more than ever. Drivers interested in switching may be curious about electric vehicles, but don’t know where to start. Fred Martin Superstore is here to help! In addition to our informative posts about hybrid vs. EVs, we’ve also put together these fun facts about electric cars to give you some background on the electric market. Find out more about electric vehicles, from when the first EV was manufactured to the different types you can find on the Medina streets, with Fred Martin Superstore.

The First EV Was Built in 1884

The very first electric vehicle was built by London innovator Thomas Parker, who was in charge of electrifying the London Underground. Concerned about the dependency on coal and the smog forming over London, he built and designed an electric vehicle that used another of his inventions, a high-capacity rechargeable battery.

EVs Include Cars, Transit Buses, Trucks, & More!

Many EVs on the market today are sedans or SUVs, like the Jeep 4xe models, but those aren’t the only kinds of vehicles that have been electrified around Akron! Electric vehicles are beginning to include heavy-duty truck models, buses, and even mail-carrying trucks. Several companies that deal with transit or delivery are considering moving towards electric due to lower operating costs.

Charge Your Vehicle at Home or On the Go

One of the biggest concerns that drivers have when switching to electric is the lack of charging infrastructure. As the EV market has grown, charging stations are regularly popping up across the country, with several companies now boasting coast-to-coast coverage for their EV vehicles! You can now find EV charging stations in libraries, grocery stores, and pharmacies, giving you easy access to reliable charging on the go.

Want the convenience of charging at home? Electric chargers can be installed in your home garage, giving you convenient access for quick top-ups or overnight charging.

There are Five Categories of Electric Vehicles

While many Barberton/Norton drivers know about EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, there are a few more types of electric vehicles on the market. See them all below:

  1. Electric Vehicles run entirely on electric power, using a large battery and electric motors to power your daily drives.
  2. Plug-In Hybrids use a combination of electric motors and an internal combustion engine, allowing you to charge and run on electric power and switch to gas as needed.
  3. Hybrid EVs combine the power of electric motors and traditional gas engines, working in tandem to make the fuel you buy last longer on the Brunswick roads.
  4. Extended-Range EVs are EVs that rely on their large electric batteries and motors but come with a small internal combustion engine for charging the electric battery.
  5. Neighborhood EVs are small EVs that only charge through a standard wall outlet and are meant to be used in slower, smaller areas. Most can only go up to 30 mph!
