Jeep Wrangler 4xe Announced

Under the hood of the Wrangler 4xe, drivers will find two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack working in conjunction with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine and an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. This powertrain configuration optimizes that efficiency of the hybrid propulsion components, mating them to the SUV’s proven and world-renowned driveline. Diving into the specifics, this powertrain is comprised of a 2.0L turbo I-4, an engine mounted motor-generator unit, a transmission, and a 400-volt, 27-kWh, 96-cell lithium-ion, nickel manganese cobalt battery pack.

The driver of the Wrangler 4xe can tailor the hybrid powertrain to suit each of the adventures, whether they are commuting to and from work or heading out to explore the great outdoors. The hybrid powertrain has three modes of operation and they are known as E Selec. Via the buttons mounted on the instrument panel, the driver can select the powertrain mode they desire. No matter which mode is chosen, the Wrangler 4xe operates as a hybrid vehicle once the battery reaches its minimum charging level. The first of the three modes is eSave which prioritizes the propulsion of the engine, saving the battery charge for later. Up next is the Electric mode that operates on zero-emission electric power only until the drive requests more torque. The last mode is Hybrid which blends torque from the engine and electric motor.

The Wrangler is an off-roading legend and the Wrangler 4xe model does not compromise its capabilities for hybrid power under the hood. In fact, the seamless integration of electric power into the Wrangler 4xe;s 4×4 drivetrain gives the SUV new levels of off-roading performance. There are three models offered for the Wrangler 4xe and they are all equipped with full-time 4×4 systems, the Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and front and rear next-generation Dana 44 axles.
