How is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe powered?
Under the hood of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a combination of a gas-powered engine and two electric motors. The engine used is a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine. The electric power comes from one electric motor where the alternator would typically be and another in the transmission, taking the place of the standard torque converter. The fuel efficiency numbers are 470 miles of total driving range, the gas-equivalent of 56 MPG, and 25 miles of all-electric driving. If you’re more interested in the power, you’ll be pleased to know that the Grand Cherokee 4xe pumps out an exciting 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of instantly available torque.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe capable of off-roading?
A lot is expected from Jeep when it comes to all-terrain capabilities. Therefore, a lot was on the line while adding hybrid power to the Grand Cherokee. And Jeep did not disappoint! All Grand Cherokee 4xe models come with a 4×4 system. The Limited, Overland, and Summit 4xe come with Quadra-Trac II 4×4. This uses a network of sensors and a two-speed transfer case. The sensors continuously monitor wheelspin and detect a loss of traction. Meanwhile, the two-speed transfer case alters the distribution of torque to the wheels depending on which axle has the most traction. The Trailhawk 4xe comes exclusively with Quadra-Trac II 4×4 with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Trac II transfer case has a low-range gear ratio for optimal low-speed crawling control. At the same time, the limited-slip rear differential gives it the ability to send up to 100% of available torque to a single wheel.
How do I control the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s battery usage?
Jeep didn’t want the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s PHEV system to be a one-size-fits-all situation. That’s why they made the E-Selec drive modes, Electric, Hybrid, and E-Save. Drivers can choose these modes by pressing the desired button on the dashboard to the left of the steering column. The vehicle defaults to hybrid mode, using electric power while drivers are decelerating or coasting. Electric mode can be chosen as long as the battery has at least 1% charge left in it. This will deactivate the gas engine, running solely on battery power. Lastly, E-Save mode is available to deactivate the electric generators to save the electric power for later and allow the battery to recharge through regenerative braking.
