On December 11, 2020, assembly of the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid vehicles began at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Toledo Assembly Complex. Assembly of the Wrangler 4xe, including its 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack and 375-horsepower, 470 lb.-ft. of torque electrified powertrain, occurs on two separate shifts by more than 3,200 UAW-represented employees. The Wrangler 4xes will arrive at dealer showrooms in early 2021 and will initially include two models, the Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe.
What does the Hybrid drivetrain consist of?
The Wrangler 4xes sport a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with two attached electric motors. The first electric motor is a high-voltage, liquid-cooled eTorque motor generator unit that replaces the conventional alternator. The second high-voltage motor-generator is mounted at the front of the transmission case and is the drive for pure electric operation of the Wrangler 4xe.
The power for electric propulsion comes from a 17-kWh, 400-volt, lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) graphite battery pack which is replenished externally by a charging port on the driver’s side, or internally by the turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine while driving.
Is the Wrangler 4xe going to be a good off-road vehicle?
It sure is! Both the Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe are built with Jeep’s Trail Rated running gear. This includes solid front and rear axles, full-time 4×4 two-speed transfer case, and fully articulating suspension. Off-road enthusiasts will find that the instant availability of torque from the Wrangler 4xe’s electric motors offer a unique experience with instantaneous power and torque for climbing and crawling.
What features do the Wrangler 4xe Launch Editions come with?
The Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe will come with 20-inch wheels, leather-trimmed bucket seats, LED Lighting Group, Uconnect 4C NAV with 8.4-inch display, nine-speaker Alpine audio system with subwoofer, a 2.72:1 Selec-Trac Full-Time 4WD System, and Dana 44 HD wide axles.
