On one side we have the 2019 Jeep Cherokee with legendary off-road capability, powerful engines, and loads of features. On the other side, we have the 2019 Ford Escape with trim level exclusive engines, available all-wheel-drive on some models, and several trim levels.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Power & Handling

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The standard engine produces 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque which can make up to 31 miles per gallon. If you’re looking for more horsepower you can opt for a 3.2-liter V6 engine. The V6 makes 271 horsepower, 239 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 4,500 pounds. Jeep also offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for the Cherokee which makes 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel-drive comes standard on the Trailhawk model, no matter the engine option.

2019 Ford Escape Power & Handling

The base model Ford Escape S is powered by an underwhelming 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5-liter engine is mated solely with front-wheel-drive and makes 29 mpg. If you’re looking for more horsepower you’ll have to opt for one of the higher-end trim levels. The SE and SEL come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that makes 179 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. While you can get this engine with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive it is still less powerful than the Cherokee’s standard engine. Locked away with the top tier Titanium model is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine which produces 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features & Design

Don’t be fooled by its stature the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a small crossover SUV jam-packed with features. The base Cherokee Latitude comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker sound system, smartphone integration, xenon headlights, and heated side mirrors. The front passenger seat has a hidden storage compartment inside the seat cushion so you can safely secure your valuables. The Limited model adds a power liftgate, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and leather upholstery. The Overland model adds even more luxurious features which include ventilated front seats, navigation, a nine-speaker sound system, and a sound-deadening windshield. Since the Cherokee is a Jeep you know you can go ahead and get your tires dirty. The Trailhawk model adds a locking rear differential, increased ground clearance, off-road-oriented suspension tuning, skid plates, and tow hooks.

2019 Ford Escape Features & Design

The base Ford Escape S is so unremarkable it is barely even worth mentioning. On the S model, you’ll find a 4.2-inch central display, Bluetooth, cruise control, and air conditioning. Upgrading to the SE model doesn’t get you a ton more features either. Standard features on the SE include roof rails, keyless entry keypad, and foglights. You don’t really get any notable features until the SEL trim which comes with a power liftgate, premium cloth upholstery, heated side mirrors, and roof racks. Sitting at the top is the Titanium model with xenon headlights, navigation, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Conclusions

It’s clear to see that the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is simply the better vehicle. The base model of the Cherokee comes fully equipped with features like xenon headlights that you can only get on the top tier Escape model. The Jeep Cherokee also offers drivers an off-road oriented model so you can take on any adventure, while the Escape is stuck sticking to paved roads.
